The Lavras Agricultural School was founded in 1908 by Dr. Samuel Rhea Gammon, with Dr. Benjamin Harris Hunnicutt as its first director. In 1938, it was renamed the Lavras Higher School of Agriculture (ESAL). The institution was federalized in 1963 and, in 1994, its transformation into a university was consolidated, becoming known as the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA).

Located in the municipality of Lavras, in the state of Minas Gerais, UFLA has a main campus covering almost 600 hectares, with over 240,000 square meters of built area and a large concentration of green spaces. Currently, the institution is involved in different fields of knowledge, offering 43 undergraduate programs (stricto sensu), 40 of which are in-person and 3 in distance learning mode, in addition to more than 40 postgraduate programs, including eight professional master's degrees. Its academic staff consists of more than 750 professors and approximately 560 administrative technicians.
